Denali

Denali

Welcome to Alaska! Denali is the tallest mountain in North America, rising so high it makes its own weather and pokes above the clouds.

Why is it special?

At 20,310 feet tall, it is the highest mountain peak anywhere in North America.

Its native Koyukon Athabascan name, Denali, means "the tall one" or "the great one."

How was it formed?

Denali was pushed up over millions of years as huge plates of the Earth's crust slowly crashed together.

Snow and ice pile up so high on its slopes that it feeds many glaciers, some more than 30 miles long.

Amazing facts

Denali rises about 18,000 feet from its base, an even bigger vertical climb than Mount Everest!

It sits inside Denali National Park, a wild area bigger than the state of New Hampshire.
