Dubrovnik
Welcome to Dubrovnik, Croatia! This stunning old city sits right on the sparkling Adriatic Sea, still wrapped in the massive stone walls that protected it hundreds of years ago.
Why is it famous?
Its Old Town is completely surrounded by huge stone walls, nearly 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) long.
The city's red-roofed buildings and blue sea views have made it one of the most photographed spots in Europe.
How was it built?
The walls were built and strengthened between the 13th and 17th centuries using white limestone from a nearby quarry.
Builders even mixed seaweed, eggshells, and sand into the mortar to help hold the massive stones together.
Amazing facts
The walls reach up to 25 meters (82 feet) tall in some spots.
Visitors can walk the entire loop along the top of the walls, taking in views of the sea and rooftops below.
