Hong Kong

Welcome to Hong Kong! This harbor city is famous for its dazzling skyline of skyscrapers packed onto steep green hills, with old wooden ferries and clattering trams still weaving through it all.

Why is it famous?

Hong Kong has one of the most spectacular skylines on Earth, with hundreds of skyscrapers rising straight up from the edge of Victoria Harbour.

It's a major world trading port where East and West have mixed together for over 150 years, blending Chinese traditions with international city life.

How was it built?

Hong Kong grew from a small fishing and trading settlement into a major port because its deep, sheltered harbor was perfect for ships.

With very little flat land available, builders learned to build upward instead of outward, packing incredibly tall skyscrapers onto a narrow strip between the sea and steep green mountains.

Amazing facts

Hong Kong has more skyscrapers than any other city in the world.

The Star Ferry has been crossing Victoria Harbour since 1888 and still carries passengers back and forth today.
