Mountain Gorilla

Meet the mountain gorilla! These huge, gentle apes live high in the misty, forested volcanoes of Rwanda, sharing almost all of their DNA with humans.

Why is it special?

Mountain gorillas are one of the rarest great apes, living only high up in a handful of misty volcanic mountains in Africa.

They share about 98% of their DNA with humans, making them one of our closest animal relatives.

How does it live?

Gorillas live in family groups called troops, led by a big, wise male called a silverback.

They spend most of the day eating leaves, stems, and bamboo, and build a brand-new nest of branches to sleep in every single night.
