Raja Ampat

Welcome to Indonesia! Raja Ampat is a scattering of jungle-covered islands surrounded by the most species-rich coral reefs scientists have ever found — an underwater rainbow of fish, coral, and color.

Why is it famous?

Raja Ampat sits at the heart of the 'Coral Triangle,' the richest area of ocean life on Earth.

Its waters are home to more kinds of coral and fish than anywhere else scientists have measured in the ocean.

How was it formed?

The islands are limestone karst, pushed up from the ocean floor and shaped by rain and waves into steep, jungle-topped domes.

Warm, nutrient-rich currents flowing between the islands helped an incredible variety of coral and marine life take hold over millions of years.

Amazing facts

More than 1,700 kinds of fish and 75% of all known coral species live in Raja Ampat's waters.

'Raja Ampat' means 'Four Kings' in Indonesian, named after its four main islands.
