The Great Migration
Welcome to the Serengeti! Every year, more than a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras travel together in a huge circle across the plains, searching for fresh grass and water.
Why is it famous?
It is the largest migration of land animals anywhere on Earth.
Nearly 2 million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles travel together in a massive, moving herd.
How does it happen?
The animals follow the rain, moving in a giant circle between the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara in Kenya.
Zebras and wildebeest often travel together — zebras remember safe paths, while wildebeest can smell rain and water from far away.
Amazing facts
About 8,000 wildebeest calves are born every day during the calving season!
A newborn wildebeest calf can stand and run within minutes of being born.
