Suzhou Museum

Suzhou Museum

Welcome to Suzhou, China! The Suzhou Museum mixes crisp white walls and diamond-shaped gray roofs with a calm garden of ponds, rocks, and bamboo.

Why is it famous?

It was designed by I. M. Pei in his own hometown region, blending Suzhou's traditional garden style with bold new shapes.

The building is full of octagons, diamonds, and triangles, like a giant puzzle made of simple geometric pieces.

A garden inside a museum

A central courtyard has a reflecting pond, stone "mountains," bridges, and a bamboo forest.

Glass roofs and metal sunshades let soft natural light flow into the galleries without harming the art inside.

Amazing facts

It holds around 30,000 pieces of art, pottery, and ancient calligraphy.

It opened in 2006, right next to a 16th-century royal residence that's still part of the museum grounds.
