Windsor Castle
Welcome to Windsor Castle, England! Built nearly 1,000 years ago, this is the oldest and largest castle in the world that's still lived in today, home to British royalty for generation after generation.
Why is it famous?
Windsor Castle is the oldest occupied castle in the world, meaning people have continuously lived there for centuries, right up to today.
It's also the largest inhabited castle on Earth, spread across about 13 acres of towers, walls, and grand halls.
How was it built?
William the Conqueror first built a wooden castle here around 1070, soon after he conquered England, as part of a ring of forts protecting London.
Over the following centuries, kings and queens rebuilt it in stone and kept adding towers, chapels, and grand rooms, turning it into the castle you see today.
Amazing facts
