Brandenburg Gate

Welcome to Germany! The Brandenburg Gate is a huge stone archway in the heart of Berlin, topped with a bronze statue of a chariot pulled by four horses.

Why is it famous?

It's Germany's most famous landmark and a powerful symbol of peace and unity.

The gate once stood right next to the Berlin Wall, dividing East and West Berlin, and became world-famous when the wall came down in 1989.

How was it formed?

It was built over 200 years ago, in the 1790s, modeled after the grand gateway to the Acropolis in Athens.

Twelve tall columns support the structure, forming five passageways through the gate.
