Hassan II Mosque 3D
Welcome to Casablanca, Morocco! The Hassan II Mosque is one of the largest mosques in the world, with a tower so tall it's the tallest minaret on Earth — and part of the building sits right over the ocean.
Why is it famous?
One-third of the mosque is built out over the Atlantic Ocean, so worshippers can look through glass floors and see the waves below.
Its minaret (tower) stands 210 meters (689 feet) tall — the tallest religious tower in the world.
How was it built?
It took thousands of skilled Moroccan artisans nearly seven years to carve the intricate stone, tile, and wood decorations by hand.
The roof can actually slide open in just a few minutes, letting sunlight and fresh air pour into the huge prayer hall.
Quick facts
- The mosque can hold up to 105,000 worshippers inside and in its courtyard — more people than most sports stadiums.
- At night, a laser beam shines from the top of the minaret, pointing toward the holy city of Mecca.
- The floors are heated, so people can sit comfortably even in cooler weather.
