Brazil
Chapada Diamantina 3D
Welcome to Brazil! Chapada Diamantina is a wild highland region of flat-topped mountains, deep canyons, and countless waterfalls, named for the diamonds once mined here.
Why is it famous?
It's home to Cachoeira da Fumaça, one of Brazil's tallest waterfalls, whose falling water often turns to mist before reaching the ground.
Explorers can hike across dramatic plateaus, swim in crystal-clear pools, and crawl through underground caves.
How was it formed?
Wind and rivers spent millions of years wearing down ancient rock, carving flat-topped mountains, deep valleys, and cave systems.
Rivers still cut through soft rock underground today, slowly forming new caves and tunnels.
Quick facts
- In the 1800s, people flocked here after diamonds were discovered in the region's rivers, which is how it got its name.
- Cachoeira da Fumaça means 'Smoke Waterfall' in Portuguese, because its spray drifts like smoke in the wind.
- The park protects rare animals like jaguars, giant armadillos, and anteaters, plus a hummingbird found nowhere else on Earth.
