Duomo di Milano

Welcome to Italy! The Duomo di Milano is a colossal marble cathedral bristling with spires, spikes, and statues, right in the heart of the busy city of Milan.

Why is it famous?

It's the largest church in Italy and one of the largest in the world.

Its forest of spires and thousands of carved statues make its rooftop feel almost like its own stone city in the sky.

How was it formed?

Construction began in 1386 and took nearly 600 years to fully finish, with the final touches added in the 1960s.

Builders used a special pale pink marble, brought by boat and canal from quarries far away.

Quick facts

  • The cathedral has 135 spires and more than 3,400 statues decorating it, inside and out.
  • A golden statue of the Madonna, nicknamed 'La Madonnina,' stands on top of the tallest spire, watching over the whole city.
  • Visitors can walk on the roof itself, weaving between the spires with views over Milan.
