London

Welcome to England! London is a huge, historic city on the River Thames, home to a queen's palace, a giant clock tower everyone calls Big Ben, bright red telephone boxes, and double-decker buses trundling through the streets.

Why is it famous?

London has been an important city for nearly 2,000 years, and today it's one of the biggest and most visited cities on Earth.

It's home to famous sights like the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, and the River Thames winding right through the middle of it all.

A city with a long story

London started as a small Roman settlement called Londinium almost 2,000 years ago, built beside the River Thames.

It grew bigger and bigger over the centuries, surviving a great fire in 1666 and rebuilding itself into the sprawling modern city millions of people call home today.
