Mount Rushmore 3D
Welcome to the Black Hills of South Dakota! Mount Rushmore is a huge mountain with the faces of four American presidents carved right into the granite rock.
Why is it famous?
It shows the giant carved faces of four U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.
It celebrates the first 150 years of American history and is one of the most recognized monuments in the world.
How was it built?
Sculptor Gutzon Borglum and about 400 workers carved the mountain using dynamite and jackhammers.
Workers were lowered down the mountain in harnesses to carefully carve each giant face.
Quick facts
- Each face is about 60 feet tall — as tall as a six-story building!
- It took 14 years to carve, from 1927 to 1941.
- No workers died during the carving, which was amazing for such a dangerous job.
