New York City

Welcome to the United States! New York City started as a small trading post on an island and grew into one of the biggest, busiest cities on Earth. It's famous for its soaring skyscrapers, its bright lights, its giant green park in the middle of all the buildings, and the millions of people from every corner of the world who call it home.

Why is it famous?

New York is famous for its skyline of skyscrapers, including the Empire State Building, which was the tallest building in the world for almost 40 years.

Times Square lights up day and night with giant glowing billboards, earning it the nickname 'The Crossroads of the World.'

A city that grew up fast

New York began as a small Dutch trading settlement called New Amsterdam, built on the island of Manhattan over 350 years ago.

As ships full of people arrived from all over the world, the city kept growing outward and upward, connecting its islands with bridges like the Brooklyn Bridge.
