Petronas Towers

Welcome to Kuala Lumpur! The Petronas Towers rise into the sky as a matching pair, linked by a sky bridge, their shape inspired by Malaysia's culture.

Why is it famous?

For six years, these were the tallest buildings anywhere in the world.

They are still the tallest twin towers on Earth, standing exactly the same height side by side.

How was it built?

Its floor plan is shaped like an eight-pointed star, a pattern found in Islamic art, to honor Malaysia's culture.

Because the ground below was soft, engineers had to dig extremely deep and pour huge amounts of concrete to give the towers a steady footing.

Quick facts

  • The towers stand 1,483 feet (452 meters) tall, with 88 floors each.
  • A sky bridge connects the two towers between the 41st and 42nd floors — it's the highest two-story bridge in the world.
  • The sky bridge isn't fully bolted down — it can slide slightly so the towers can sway safely in strong wind.
