Space Needle

Welcome to Seattle! The Space Needle is a futuristic tower shaped like a flying saucer, built to show off what the future might look like.

Why is it famous?

It was built for the 1962 World's Fair, whose theme was all about the future and outer space.

It instantly became the symbol of Seattle and one of the most recognized towers in the country.

How was it built?

An architect sketched the very first idea for it on a napkin while imagining a tower topped with a giant, hovering saucer shape.

Construction crews built the whole 605-foot tower in only about 400 days, finishing just in time for the fair.

Quick facts

  • It stands 605 feet tall and was once the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River.
  • It opened on the very first day of the 1962 World's Fair, which drew over 2.3 million visitors.
  • Its top level once held the world's first rotating restaurant, which turns a full circle in about 47 minutes.
