Terracotta Army

Meet the Terracotta Army! Buried near the city of Xi'an, China, this incredible army of life-sized clay soldiers was built to protect China's first emperor in the afterlife.

Why is it famous?

It's one of the greatest archaeological discoveries ever found.

Thousands of life-sized clay soldiers, each with a different face, guard the tomb of China's first emperor.

How was it built?

Skilled artisans molded and fired each soldier from clay over 2,000 years ago.

The warriors were originally painted in bright colors and held real bronze weapons.

Quick facts

  • More than 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots, and 670 horses have been found so far.
  • No two warrior faces are exactly alike - each one was individually crafted.
  • Farmers digging a well in 1974 accidentally discovered the buried army.
